Why I Teach
My teaching philosophy is grounded in a holistic approach, recognizing that music education goes beyond technique and theory—it shapes character and builds essential life skills. As a music educator, I guide students on a journey of personal development through music. I see myself as a teacher, coach, and mentor. These roles are interconnected, for I believe that effective teaching blends knowledge-sharing, skill-building, and character development.
What I Teach
As a teacher, I connect musical concepts with their historical contexts, enabling students to experience music as a living, evolving art form. As a coach, I foster a progressive learning environment where students are empowered to develop their skills, embrace challenges, and achieve mastery. I help students set personal goals and view mistakes as opportunities for growth. As a mentor, I model professionalism, guide students through adversity, and promote critical thinking, helping them take ownership of their learning. My goal is for students to excel in music and grow as thoughtful, disciplined, and resilient individuals. To further this holistic approach, I encourage active engagement and mastery of musical concepts.
How I Teach
I believe in a mastery-based approach to learning, ensuring students achieve a high level of understanding and skill before moving on to new material. Concepts are introduced sequentially, building upon prior knowledge, which fosters both confidence and competence. Formative assessments allow me to gauge understanding in real-time and identify knowledge gaps. I encourage my students to reflect on their own performance and engage in peer evaluations, promoting self-awareness and enabling them to learn from one another’s perspectives. I also strive to create an interactive and responsive learning environment by encouraging students to make musical decisions, empowering them to take ownership of their learning and critical thinking skills as they apply their knowledge in creative ways.
Who I Teach
Music is an innate human quality that transcends cultural and personal boundaries. Every student, regardless of background or ability, is entitled to a rich, well-rounded music education. I believe that students from all cultural backgrounds bring unique contributions to the classroom, whether through songs, instruments, dances, or traditions. I also believe that every student—whether they are gifted, have learning differences, or face other challenges—has the potential for musical achievement. I am committed to ensuring that all students can participate and thrive in my classroom by adapting to their needs or increasing the level of challenge as appropriate. I strive to create an environment where each learner feels valued, capable, and empowered to explore and develop their musical talents.
